When someone really loves spending time tidying up a farm and making a life out of the land – in a virtual reality, ofc – , then they will love Stardew Valley, a nice new game coming from ConcernedApe. If you loved spending hours on end with Farmville or exploring with Terraria, this game may be right up your alley. Beautifully colored and pixelated environments with changing seasons, lots of fruits, veggies and animals to cultivate and tend to and lots of mining to do will keep you busy for many many hours in the future.
Stardew Valley story
In this little pixelated adventure similar to Starbound, Terraria and Undertale (in different aspects) you are a someone giving up their job in the big city for a farm in the eponymous town inherited from your grandfather. Starting with some old tools and a few gold coins, you begin to upgrade the house, plant some seeds and find some eggs to hatch some chickens while you’re at it. As you go along, you will begin to understand that keeping a farm and making a living off of it is harder than it appears. You will need dedication, time and lots of energy to bring this town back to greatness because a large corporation managed to almost destroy the old ways of life with its pesky industrialization of everything.
When you start your new life in Stardew Valley, your farm is overgrown and nothing is in its place anymore, but if you know how to point and click you will be A OK! You can craft machines, grow crops and raise animals, tend to the garden or explore the mine! The interface is very intuitive and you get clues along your way. As you start your farming journey you also get skills that you can improve over time: farming, mining, combat, fishing and foraging. As you progress in the game you learn new recipes, find new areas to explore and choose more professions to help you make more shiny gold! Or you can spend a nice relaxing time fishing! ALL the possibilities can be found on the Wikia page too!
It’s not all fun and games in the Valley, there are monsters, bats and ghosts everywhere in the mines. As you explore, you will find mysterious places where the darkness still looms. That’s why they’re mysterious! You can find new gems, new raw materials and destroy some cute evil monsters in the process! All in a good day’s work!
The community is a very important resource in Stardew Valley because, after all, people make the economy – and the crops – bloom. You will find friends left and right and you can help them by knowing them better and they can help you by buying your stuff so everyone wins something, right?
You can be a great community helper by siding with the good people in Stardew Valley or you can screw everyone over and join the JojaMart industry. Of course, you can take care of the sentimental and romantic stuff too. You don’t have to be alone in this new town. You can share your responsibilities with a partner, should you find someone you like in the Valley. You can start a family, have kids, move in together, just stay great friends…
The general consensus on Stardew Valley is that this little farming and social simulator does its job very very well. It reminds players of different similar titles and entrances them for hours and hours. Getting that horse you need is not an easy task! And your house always needs remodeling! AND your friends will love some nice food once in a while! You can find the game on Steam where it costs around $14 full price.
